Kingfisher Beer Cup Review – Sunshine at Last!

Last weekend saw the first good weekend of weather of this cricket season and as a result the majority of outstanding first round matches, along with some of the scheduled second round matches, of the Kingfisher Beer Cup took place with high and low scoring matches across the country.

With their place in the second round already secure, 2011 champions Shrewsbury CC have been joined by the 2011 runners up Cambridge Granta CC who beat competition newcomers Peterborough Town CC in their delayed first round fixture. Posting a score of 195-8 from their 45 overs, Cambridge Granta successfully defended this total with the visitors from the Northamptonshire Premier League being bowled out for 170.

Individual batting performance of the weekend went to Gareth Curtis of Mansfield Hosiery Mills CC, who would have thought he had done enough to steer his team to victory following an impressive 174* from just 147 balls in their total of 271-2. But visitors Whitley Hall CC had other ideas and some impressive hitting from Jim Tasker (94* from 82 balls) and Alex Fletcher (61 from 39 balls) meant that they reached their target of 275-4 with six overs to spare to reach round two.

Other notable batting performances came from Andy Simpson (115 from 72 balls) of Scarborough CC as they beat Great Ayton CC by eight wickets, Usman Afzaal (109 from 79 balls) continued his high scoring in this competition that he produced in 2011 in West Indian Cavaliers CC seven wicket win over Quarndon CC and Ryan Sylvester’s 105 as Sully Centurions CC comfortably beat Bristol CC by 95 runs. The all-round performance of the weekend must go to Wolverhampton CC Aaron Jeavons who followed up figures of 3-59 with a century in his sides eight wicket second round victory over Stone CC of the North Staffordshire & South Cheshire Premier League.

Bowlers also shone in the sunshine with the best performance coming from James Stewart of Doncaster Town CC, who with figures of 7-18 from seven overs reduced Goole Town CC to 51 all out from just 14 overs, with 22 of those runs coming from extras, Doncaster Town easily winning in the end by eight wickets to move to round three.

In two postponed first round matches, Chris White from Panteg CC helped his side to victory in a South Wales first round derby, his figures of 6-9 from nine overs helped dismiss Ynysygerwn CC for just 60 setting up a 10 wicket victory but Swardeston CC opener Michael Eccles impressive figures of 6-19 from his nine overs could not prevent Vauxhall Mallards CC from wrapping up a win by 80 runs.

Surprise of the weekend came at Kibworth CC as the two-time winners (in 2004 and 2008) were heavily beaten by visitors Banbury CC. The Home Counties Premier League side were all out for 158, thanks in part to Aamir Mahmood’s figures of 5-26 for Kibworth. But a batting collapse saw the Leicestershire Premier League side dismissed for just 44, the lowest score of the competition so far in 2012 to give Banbury a place in round three.

Sunday 20th May will see the majority of the outstanding second round matches taking place, with round three taking place on Sunday 27th May.
